As your baby grows, Child Play will become a bigger part of your life. Newborns certainly don't need much playtime. Infants get a little more horsing around as they grow. By the time you have a toddler or pre-school aged human being on your hands, play is a big deal.
Children learn through playing. Developmentally, play is vital. It can begin very simply with games of Peek-a-boo or Ring Around the Rosy. What is important is that the child is being engaged in a playful and age appropriate manner. There are plenty of simple hand games and sing-song type games that infants and toddlers really enjoy.
It's also important for young children to experience play outside. Their coordination improves as they learn to jump, hop, climb and skip. Simple toys such as blocks are helpful to allow a child to create. Art supplies encourage creative playtime, especially when a parent joins in. Child play with other children is also an important part of socialization. Don't overdo it though -- children also need to learn to play independently.
